About The Wise Wonders | Project

The Wise Wonders | Project is set out to provide guidance to anyone seeking to enable children to not only sustain but flourish on a flourishing planet. It aims at exploring and sharing examples of innovation-driven solutions often missed, to meet children's basic needs in line with the most ambitious climate science while discovering and enhancing the wonders of life. A first version of a framework is also being developed to help prioritise actions.

The site has just been launched and the basic version is almost fully-fledged, with only some improvements left to make. Follow the progress and learn more about the project below.

If you have questions, want to bounce ideas or share thoughts on improvements and next steps to scale impacts, don't hesitate to reach out!

ABOUT | DIRECTION

What this project aims to do

Vision

A climate-safe future where all children - already alive and to come - who are expected to reach a global population of 10-11 billion by 2100 not only sustain but flourish on a flourishing planet.

Purpose

To enable all children to sustain and flourish by becoming the best version of themselves, while empowering them as thoughtful and creative global citizens, so that society and the planet - upon which their wellbeing depends - can flourish too.

Mission

To help adults reimagine the solutions needed for all children to flourish, by helping them identify innovative science-informed solutions often overlooked, while supporting children to discover, protect and enhance the wonders of life.

Goals

To fulfil the purpose and mission and support the vision, this current project has the output goals shown below.

OUTPUT GOALS
OVERALL PROGRESS (FEB 2025)
WEBSITE/RESOURCE HUB: Develop an inspiring and functioning website to provide guidance and serve as a 'resource hub', where solutions with the potential to enable kids to sustain and flourish can be gathered.
The website has been published and includes all the basic functions as well as a first set of solutions. Besides that, some content is still missing (especially the book reviews) and some of the design, layout and functions still need fine-tuning, especially for mobiles and tablets.
EXPAND OPTIONS: Provide inspiring examples of solutions often overlooked that meet children's basic physical and 'personal growth' needs in new ways, using the latest most ambitious climate science as a minimum baseline to help ensure solutions are sustainable at global scale and long-term.
Solutions have been included in all needs areas (currently almost 150 solutions), except from "Participation & Belonging" (see under "How"). Several solutions for the character strengths under Mental growth also need to be included. While many of the solutions can directly or with some tweaking cater for children 0-18 years, more solutions for older kids shall be included.
FRAMEWORK TO PRIORITISE ACTIONS: Explore how a first version of a science-informed framework can be developed that helps caregivers and anyone interested in supporting kids to flourish to understand the actual impacts of different actions, what fundamental shifts are needed, and how to prioritise actions and solutions.
A first version of the framework has been developed, but there is still work left to do to clarify it, such a step 3 of the framework ("Blueprinting" found under "What").

ABOUT | FOR WHOM

Who this site is for

The Wise Wonders | Project provides guidance for caregivers and anyone seeking to help children reach their full potential to sustain and flourish, while empowering them as creative and thoughtful participants in society. This is done by providing tools and examples of innovation-driven solutions often missed, to meet kids' basic needs in line with the most ambitious climate science while discovering the wonders of life.

WHY THE WISE WONDERS PROJECT

Level up the game by expanding options to sustain and flourish

This site takes a 360° approach to enable kids to flourish and doing so in a way that aligns with the most ambitious climate science by focusing on:

1. REAL NEEDS: Not taking the need of different solutions for granted but asking what kids' basic needs truly are.

2. REAL SOLUTIONS: Moving beyond doing the same things less bad to meeting real needs in new radically more effective ways.

3. REAL IMPACTS: In addition to the mainstream reduction of one's own negative impacts (Footprint), focus is on increasing positive impacts by supporting mindshifts (Mindprint) to  empower children as capable citizens and accelerate the transformative changes needed at a societal level (Blueprint).

ABOUT | FOR WHAT

What you gain

As a starting point, the main target group of this project has primarily been direct caregivers, like parents and (pre-)schools. If you relate to any of those groups, here you can read about what value this site can bring to you.

As this site aims to support fundamental shifts in society which requires collaboration between people and organisations from all parts of society, some information on the site could also be relevant for other important stakeholders, like companies, cities, policymakers and international organisations and NGOs as well. The benefits for those stakeholders and how they can support will be clarified further down the line.

    • EXPANDING OPTIONS: Highlights overlooked solutions for parents seeking to help their kids flourish - not just sustain - by going beyond mainstream sustainability’s "doing the same things less bad" approach toward radically more effective ways to meet their needs.

    • SCIENCE-INFORMED: Ensures solutions align with the latest most ambitious climate science.

    • PRIORITISATION: Helps parents focus on high-impact solutions by identifying true basic needs - doing the right things first, not just doing things right.

    • CONCRETE EXAMPLES: Offers practical, real-world solutions across all of a child's basic needs to rapidly get started.

    • FRAMEWORK: Provides a structured guide for parents who want to find solutions by themselves while also avoiding  overwhelmed - focusing on what truly supports both their child’s and the planet's flourishing.

    • FUN: Discover new solutions and lifestyles that are fun and exciting and that will create fond memories together with your child!

  • The curriculum for the preschool has been used as one of the inspirational guidelines in developing the approach and structure of this initiative. Therefore, this site helps preschools achieve many of their goals and fundamental values, such as:

    • PRIORITISATION OF SUSTAINABLE CHOICES: Goal: An understanding of how different choices people make in everyday life can contribute to sustainable development. Fundamental value: The preschool should also offer several options to choose from to provide increased conditions for children to broaden their playing patterns and choice of activities. (This site expands the options for preschools and children to discover often overlooked ways to contribute to sustainability that moves beyond the traditional sustainability approach (doing the same things less harmful), which climate science shows is not enough to avoid dangerous climate change. While many preschools are already pioneers in adopting many of those overlooked solutions they may not always be aware of it, why this initiative can support in seeing just that. The framework presented on this site also helps in prioritising science-informed high-impact solutions to 'do the right things' first, not just 'doing things right').

    • HEALTHY LIFESTYLES: Fundamental value: The preschools should enable children to participate in physical activities and spend time in different natural environments. Education should give children the opportunity to experience the joy of movement and encourage healthy lifestyles, including nutritious meals. (See for example the activities and solutions suggested under HOW/"Connect to nature" and HOW/"Nutrition & Health").

    • PARTICIPATION: Goal: A growing responsibility for and interest in sustainable development and active participation in society. (This is at the core of this initiative and the solutions highlighted here all serve to empower children as active and thoughtful participants in society. There is further one section currently under development that will give direct concrete examples to further develop kids' opportunities to participate in society).

    • CREATIVITY & CREATION: Goals: Curiosity, creativity and a desire to play and learn; an ability to build, create and construct; an ability to communicate through different forms of expression such as image, form, drama, movement, singing, music and dance. (See especially the page for "Creativity & Science" under the HOW-section).

    • NATURAL SCIENCES: Goal: an understanding of natural sciences, knowledge of plants and animals, and simple chemical processes and physical phenomena. (See the examples of activities and books under HOW/"Connect to nature").

    • CONFIDENCE & IDENTITY: Goals: Independence and trust in their own ability, as well as developing their identity and feeling security in it. (See the examples of activities and books under HOW/"Mental growth" generally and the page about Confidence & Courage specifically. The initiative's focus on participation can also strengthen kids' believes in themselves as capable citizens).

    • EMPATHY AND ETHICAL DILEMMAS: Goals: The ability to take into account and empathise with the situation of other people, as well as a willingness to help others; the ability to discover, reflect on and work out their position on different ethical dilemmas and fundamental questions of life in daily reality (See the examples of activities and books under HOW/"Mental growth" generally and the pages about Empathy and Wisdom & Integrity specifically specifically).

    • CHEMICAL SMART PRESCHOOL: This site showcases several examples of solutions for inspiration that can support City of Stockholm's aim to achieve "Chemical smart preschools". (See for example under HOW/"Nutrition & Health" and "Smart living").
