Grit & Self-regulation
Grit and self-regulation are two different but mutually reinforcing character strengths.
Grit refers to a person's perseverance and passion for long-term challenging goals, enabling commitment over time, especially when faced with challenges. Self-regulation helps maintain grit and stay focused on long-term goals by delaying gratification and controlling one's thoughts, emotions, and behaviours in the short-term, even when distractions arise.
Key to grit and self-regulation is arguably a growth-mindset, believing abilities can be developed through practice and perseverance, seeing failures as crucial opportunities for improvement.
Below are a few ideas on how those character strengths can be developed in daily life.

HOW | GRIT & SELF-REGULATION
Redefining failure
The older kids become, the higher the probability that they develop a fear of failure, seeing mistakes as something bad or as a sign they aren’t good enough. This can make them avoid trying new things or taking risks.
However, failure can be redefined as a crucial part of learning, helping children grow and improve, while fostering a growth mindset which is key for grit and self-regulation.
By teaching kids to view failure as a chance to learn, their creativity, innovation and resilience can develop. This mindset is essential for building a future where progress and doing the right things are more important than doing things to perfection.
Growth-mindset
From fear of failure to practice, experimentation and effort
Below are a few examples of situations in daily life - here being in the playground - where a growth-mindset can be practiced. What examples can you come up with from your daily life that can encourage a growth-mindset?
